Sliding guideways have been commonly applied to the machine-tool table system. However, rolling guideways have attracted the attention of machine-tool builders who are trying to increase table speed for the use of high-speed cutting. It is generally considered that chatter vibration is likely to occur for rolling guideways due to the low damping ability. However, a comparison of the dynamic characteristics between sliding and rolling guideways has not been carried out quantitatively thus far. In this study, a test table system which enables a quantitative comparison in the dynamic behavior of the same table using rolling guideways and sliding guideways one after the other is specially designed. The difference of the dynamic behavior of each of the guideways is investigated through an impulse-response method and cutting test.
