Effect of educational facilities on self-assessed student learning performance and health

A questionnaire survey and a field survey of school facilities were conducted to elucidate the effect of various spaces, such as classrooms and gymnasiums, on the learning performance and health of students. The survey results were statistically analyzed to discern how the perception and satisfaction of students is related to the environment of school facilities and how the learning performance and health of students is related to satisfaction with school facilities. It was found that satisfaction with each space was significantly related to elements of the environment, such as the desirability of the interior and its size. Additionally, it was found that students who reported being satisfied with both their classroom environment and the overall environment reported no stress and being satisfied with the ease of learning. The results of this study suggest that both learning performance and student health are affected by non-classroom environments in the school, such as the gymnasium and schoolyard, as well as by the classroom environment.
