Experimental study on localization and quantification of structural damage using ZigBee Motes

Experimental study on localization and quantification of structural damage using ZigBee Motes was carried out. ZigBee motes and wired accelerometers were simultaneously installed on a 5-story shear frame structure. The two sets of acceleration impulse response time histories acquired from Zigbee Motes and wired accelerometers were collected and compared. This 5-story shear frame structure was introduced damage into by replacing columns by weak columns. The modal frequency changes rate obtained from acceleration impulse response time histories acquired from ZigBee Motes and wired accelerometers were used for forming feature vectors for pattern recognition. The damage localization and quantification based on ZigBee Motes and wired acceleration were carried out respectively, and the results were compared and analyzed. Although ZigBee Motes need to be improved to avoid packets loss, it is already of delightful ability of damage identification. In the fields of structural health monitoring (SHM), ZigBee technology is with good prospect and opens new horizons for research and development.
