The characteristics of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in graded-index polymer optical fibers (POFs) either doped with the organic dye rhodamine 6G or doped with the conjugated polymer PFO are studied. In the former case, the emission cross section of the dopant penetrates in the wavelengths of the absorption band much more than in the case of PFO, which affects both the minimum fiber length for the onset of ASE and the length for a maximum efficiency. For both cases, we analyze the dependence of the ASE efficiency and of the ASE threshold on the fiber length and on the overlap between dopant concentration and light-power distribution, by means of a theoretical model. We also compare the spectral width of the ASE with our experimentally obtained results for the case of rhodamine 6G - doped POFs.
