The presence of silicate anions induced the formation of planar crystals of aragonite-type carbonates on an insoluble polyalcohol substrate. The planar morphology was produced through two-dimensional dendritic growth with iso-oriented hexagonal subunits covered with silica skin. A laminated architecture was constructed by stacking of the subunits in which the c axis was arranged perpendicular to the surface.
