The simple tensile tests under a conrbcal laser scanning microscope and in-situ observations of thin film were carried out to investigate the failure process of brittle thin film under tensile loading. The results show that cracks parallel to loading direction were firstly formed and, then, cracks vertical to the loading direction were formed due to Poisson's effect. We focused on the formation of vertical cracks and proposed the buckling induced examination and cracking model to evaluate the interfacial strength between thin film and substrate. The interfacial strength obtained by that model agrees well with the interfacial strength obtained by Multi-stages peel test.
