How does the digital manual with controllability and perfect-transparency effect on workers' cognitive processes-application of Augmented Reality technology to manufacturing work

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that enables users wearing a head mounted display for this technology to see digital information superimposed on their real views. In this study, we tried to apply this technology to assembling and inspecting tasks. We developed AR manual for these tasks, which has the main characteristics of controllability, perfect-transparency, and wearability. And in order to examine how these characteristics effects on cognitive processes, we compared AR manual with other manuals that had some or none of these characteristics through experiments. As a result, we found that all of these characteristics could reduce errors and save time in the assembling task, and that perfect-transparency and wearablity could do so in the inspecting task. Further, based on the experimental results, we developed a simultaneous equation model, and estimated how much each of these characteristics of AR manual could reduce cognitive workload in the assembling and inspecting tasks, compared with traditional paper-based manuals.
