A lot of work has been carried out to investigate hydrates as a medium for the storage of hydrogen. Hydrates are an attractive option due to the availability and cost of the raw materials, their low impact on the environment and their ability to release hydrogen. The factors that need improvement include storage capacity and formation pressure. Results confirm the stoichiometric THF/H2 binary hydrate capacity of 1 wt% through Raman spectroscopy and gas evolution measurements. The tuning effect of THF, giving a storage capacity of up to 3.6 wt%, is confirmed through Raman and gas evolution. Preliminary recycling results of the THF tuning binary hydrate are shown. Work has also been carried out on the TBPB semi-clathrate. The storage capacity has been measured to be about 0.37 wt%. The enclatharation of hydrogen molecules has been confirmed through Raman spectroscopy and the semi-clathrate structure is confirmed through powder X-ray diffraction measurements.
