Purpose: The role of nieiboniian gland djsfunetion (MGD) in dry eye patients has recently attracted attention and is treated by massage and lid hygiene. However, the effects are not consistent. We developed a portable 940nm unfrared radiation eye warming instrument and performed a clinical trial in MGD patients. Material and Method: The instrument was applied for 5 min twice a day, for 34 dry eye patients with obstruct he MOD (27 female and 1 male), and we compared symptoms, fluorescent and rose bengal scores. BUT, Schirmer test, meibograph) and meibum, before, immediatelv following 1st therapy and 2 weeks after therapy. Results: BUT improved from 3. 4±1. 7 secs, to 10. 2±2. 7 secs, following 1st therapy and to 9. 9 ±3. 1 secs, after 2 weeks. Melbography did not improve, but meibum was easily pressed out in main cases at both visits. Tear evaporation Improved but was not significant, in all cases, symptoms improved from 7. 4±1. 1 to 5. 3±1. 0 in face score. Conclusion: Results of our study indicate that this infrared thermotherapy instrument is effectue in the treatment of dry eye associated with obstructive MOD. The effect of raising the temperature of this instrument is more stable than the conventional u arm compress. Positive effects on meibum and tear turn were observed immediately following the first therapy and after 2 weeks of therapy. This therapy may be effectue in dry eye associated with MGD and dry eye with short BUT.
