The authors discuss magnetophoresis, which specifically separates monocytes phagocytizing iron dextran microspheres from mononuclear cell suspensions under a DC magnetic field. Diagnostic evaluation of the phagocytic capacity was carried out for patients with liver diseases on the basis of the separation efficiency of the monocytes. Results of the magnetic separation showed that the phagocytic capacities of hepatoma and liver cirrhosis became significantly lower than those of healthy volunteers, and that the magnetophoresis was essentially available to investigate the phagocytosis.
