Transcutaneous measurement of blood glucose changes of 200mg/dl was attained by a suction ATR method. In order to establish the transcutaneous measurement of blood glucose, intercellular liquid which was drawn out from the skin surface by suction was optically measured. It is known that the composition of the intercellular liquid is similar to that of blood. The intercellular liquid is easily obtained by sucking the skin surface. Glucose has a characteristic absorbance peak. The ATR method permitted the assessment of blood glucose levels at and near its absorbance peak. A direct correlation between glucose infusion and measured blood glucose levels was found in vivo.
