Measurement of mutual diffusion coefficient by the Soret forced Rayleigh scattering method (1st Report, Examination of the method and measurement of polymer solutions)

A new apparatus to measure the mutual diffusion coefficient of liquid mixtures based on the forced Rayleigh scattering method using the Soret effect has been developed. The characteristics of the method are (1) a short measurement time of about 1 s, (2) a sample volume of a few mm3, (3) no addition of photochromic dyes, (4) the concentration dependence of the mutual diffusion coefficient is detectable. The purpose of the present study is to establish the Soret forced Rayleigh scattering method as a reliable technique for the measurement of thermophysical properties. It was found through experimental study on polymer solutions (solute: polystyrene; solvents: ethyl acetate and toluene) that this method has considerable potential for many applications.
