Measurement of the surface tension of molten silicon by the use of ripplon

A surface laser-light scattering apparatus to measure the surface tension and kinematic viscosity of high-temperature melts simultaneously has been developed. In this method, the surface properties can be obtained by the laser heterodyne detection of light scattered from thermally excited capillary waves ('ripplon'), which are typically of small amplitude (∼1 nm) and with a characteristic wavelength (∼100 μm). The surface tension of molten silicon in the temperature range from 1685 to 1770 K has been measured. The oxygen concentration in the sample after the experiment was analysed.
