Measurements in the wake of two bubbles in close proximity by combined shadow-image and PIV technique

An experimental study on flow around two similarly sized air bubbles confined in a channel with downward flow of water was conducted. The bubbles were nominally 9.1 mm in diameter and were each attached to two disks (d to approximately 2 mm) suspended across a square channel (100×100 mm2). The disks were 12 mm apart and the bubbles were at the same axial level within the 1000 mm long channel. The flowrate was held constant (ReDh = 2.5×103, based on bubble hydraulic dia.Dh = 11.7 mm). Velocity measurements were made using DPIV and IR shadow imaging in order to detect both the 2D flow-field and the bubbles' shape and gyrating motion respectively. The images revealed that the bubbles move out of phase with respect to each other, but did not collide nor coalesce. Velocity data showed an interaction of two wake-flows with the region in-between characterized by a jet-like accelerated flow. Besides velocity dam, estimates of vorticity and turbulent kinetic energy confirmed the spatio-temporal nature of the flow. Comparisons with a single-bubble data have also been made and will be presented.
