Microfabcrication of bacterial cellulose by incubating bacteria within ultralow-volume cavities surrounded by hydrogels

This paper describes microfabrication of bacterial cellulose (BC) by incubating bacteria in microscopic cavities. The cavities are formed by reversible gelation of gelatin solution and are surrounded by two hydrogels made of agarose and acrylamide. We experimentally verified that the BC producing bacteria (G. Xylinus) were entrapped in cylindrical micro cavities with this simple method and successfully microfabricated cylindrical untethered BC microstructures. The microfabricated BC can be readily applicable to strong immobilization of cells for bio and micro-robot applications.
