Absorption and fluorescence emission spectra indicated that an anionic porphyrin, 5-phenyl-10,15,20-tris(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphine (TPPS3-), in water formed ground-state complexes with various anionic aromatics. The thermodynamic parameters (ΔH and ΔS) for complexation suggested that a van der Waals interaction is the predominant binding force and a hydrophobic interaction assists the stabilization of the complexes.
