Multiple primary cancers from a standpoint of diagnostic imaging

The incidence of both metachronous as well as synchronous cancers has increased owing to the development in cancer therapy. FDG-PET/CT is a very useful modality for detecting synchronous cancer as it can survey a wide area of the body. Some reports have suggested that 1-10% of synchronous cancers can be detected using FDG-PET for cancer staging. As accurate differentiation between synchronous and primary/metastatic cancers is difficult on diagnostic imaging, histological confirmation should be performed in cases in which metastases is less probable.
