Liposome has been widely utilized as a vehicle for delivering various substances such as DNA, RNA, enzymes, proteins, metabolites, or pharmaceutical drugs into various cells. For internalization of liposomes into cells, two possible paths have been considered; namely, phagocytosis (or endocytosis) and fusion. However, all previous methods still have several disadvantages. In order to overcome these disadvantages, we have designed a fusogenic liposome as prepared by mixing simple egg phosphatidylchloline and an artificial lipid, 2-[ω-hydroxy(oxyethylene)-α-yl]-1,3-bis-(dodecyloxy) propane and investigated the fusion between the fusogenic liposomes and carrot protoplasts.
