Water-soluble polymers are generally difficult to recover after use. Therefore, biodegradability will be essential for water-soluble polymers. In order to synthesize water-soluble polyelectrolytes having both biodegradability and functionality as builder, fumarate oligomer was prepared using an enzyme. That is, diethyl fumarate was oligomerized using laccase and hydrogen peroxide in ethanol at 60°C to produce oligo (diethyl fumarate) in 80 % yield. It was confirmed that the fumarate trimer was the main constituent as analyzed by MALDI-TOF MS. Oligo (disodium fumarate) prepared by saponification was biodegradable with activated sludge.
