A phase modulation to amplitude modulation (PM-AM) conversion method that uses an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is demonstrated on an optical phase shift keying (PSK) receiver. An optical differential PSK (DPSK) receiver using Mach Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is successfully demonstrated for DPSK direct detection. Strict control of modulation depth is necessary for the MZI receiver to achieve higher sensitivity. PM-AM conversion using single-mode fibers (SMF) is also demonstrated. This type of conversion method has a wide margin in terms of SMF length, but its sensitivity is relatively low. Optical PSK receiver has bit-rate flexibility and a wide margin of modulation depth and well suits WDM systems.
