Particle Dispersion in Wake Region of Obstacles

Mechanisms of particle dispersion have been experimentally clarified in wake regions of obstacles. The present experiments have been performed in the wake regions of a pair of circular cylinders and trianglar cylinders. Detailed measurements of particle and gas velocities and particle number density are presented using a three-beam laser Doppler velocimeter. Particles of which mean diameter was 42 μm were released into the flow at the center of the gaps between two cylinders and the initial point of the wake region of the trianglar cylinders. Particles are affected by the largescale eddy in the wake region, and particle diffusivity is well correlated with the Stokes number which is defined as the ratio of the particle relaxation time to the characteristic time scale of the turbulence. This result indicates that the mechanism of the interaction between particles and largescale eddies is independent of flow configuration.
