Precision synthesis of star-shaped polymers by living cationic polymerization and preparation of thermosensitive gold nanoparticles

We synthesized various thermosensitive star-shaped polymer by living cationic polymerization with various Lewis acids in the presence of an added base. Thermosensitive gold nanoparticles (∼3nm) were prepared using thermosensitive star-shaped polymers with oxyethylene side chains as a template. The thermosensitive gold nanoparticles catalyzed aerobic alcohol oxidation in water at room temperature. A feature of these polymer-stabilized gold nanoparticles was their high durability even in an oxidation reaction. These particles can readily be separated from oxidation reaction mixture using thermosensitivity of star-shaped polymer. In addition, the particles redissolved in water at room temperature after recovery. Reuse of the particles in aerobic alcohol oxidation is currently under investigation.
