A semantic network machine IXM and its prototype are described. IXM is a multiprocessor system with large associative memories. The prototype can handle 64K links of semantic network in parallel using associative memories. It is shown that associative memory is very effective in suppressing the computational explosion in large semantic network processing. Logical operations can also be done in parallel on all the words of associative memory, achieving, for example, 1880 MOPS for the LESS THAN operation. The prototype consists of 32 processors and 128-kwords-by-40-b associative memories. IXM executes programs written in the IXL language, a superset of Prolog, so that IXM can be utilized as a back end to AI workstations.
