N2 - We presented a quantitative detection of target single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) by digitally counting gold nanoparticle (AuNP) dimers in AuNP suspension using a confocal optical setup. The AuNP dimers were formed by hybridization between two kinds of ssDNA probes immobilized on the AuNP surface and a complementary ssDNA target. The AuNPs were also modified with a self-Assembled monolayer for good dispersibility in a suspension. AuNP monomers and dimers could be distinguished simply by the scattered light intensity from AuNPs at a detection limit of sub-10 pM level.
