Quantitative visualization of convective heat transfer near the stagnation region of an impinging jet

Velocity and temperature fields of a two-dimensional water jet impinging onto a hot surface were simultaneously measured combining techniques of digital particle image velocimetry (DPIV) and laser induced fluorescence (LIF). Spatio-temporal motion of streamwise vortices and turbulent heat flux on the hot surface were revealed from time-dependent velocity and temperature maps for Re = 2000. The measurements show that a paired vortex sweeps the thermal boundary layer and ejects a high temperature fluid out of the layer.
