Electrode kinetics of some transition metal redox couples has been investigated in the ionic liquids based on bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (TFSA-).Some properties of the ionic liquids could be evaluated from the potentials of redox couples. The diffusion of a charged species in the ionic liquids is slower than that in conventional solutions due to higher viscosity and was found to be influenced not only by the size of the species (frictional retarding force) but also by the charge density of the species (Coulombic retarding force) because of strong Coulombic interaction between the species and the ions composing the ionic liquids. The rate constants of outer-sphere electron transfer reactions were found to be also affected by the viscosity of the ionic liquids. The rate constants were inversely proportional to the viscosity. These results imply high viscosity of the ionic liquids may be disadvantageous for practical applications at ambient temperature. Thus, it will be better to use the ionic liquids for electrochemical applications at higher temperature.
