The velocity measurements in the turbulent separated flow in an asymmetric plane diffuser are presented. The flow field is particularly attractive to turbulence modelers because of the fully developed turbulent channel flow at the inlet plane, so that the ambiguity in specifying the inlet boundary condition is minimized, and the flow separation which occurs at the inclined wall due to adverse pressure gradient, providing challenges to all kinds of turbulence models including RANS and LES. The new data set covers lower Reynolds numbers than previous experiments, while retaining the inlet condition fully developed turbulent flow. The results show that the turbulent boundary layer on the diffuser wall does not detach from the wall, when Reynolds number at the diffuser inlet is sufficiently low. The results point to the existence of the critical Reynolds number in terms of the flow separation in the present flow configuration, although the influence of the side wall becomes remarkable.
