Significant noise reduction for radio over fiber using microscopically heterogeneous graded-index plastic optical fiber

We significantly reduce the reflection noises in a multimode fiber link (MMF) with a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) by using microscopically heterogeneous graded-index plastic optical fiber (GI POF). It is suggested that the noise reduction effect results from the intrinsic mode coupling of the GI POF, which can lower the coupling efficiency of the reflected light to the VCSEL cavity through the reflected-beam quality degradation. This could allow for low-cost Radio-over-Fiber systems without optical isolator and fiber end-face polishing.
