Simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing of femtosecond laser pulses for directly writing optical waveguides in Pr3+ doped ZBLAN glass

Characteristics of clad-drawn optical waveguides in a Pr3+ doped ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) glass using simultaneous spatial and temporal focusing (SSTF) of femtosecond laser pulses are described. Thanks to the SSTF, the axial two-photon excitation length is confined to ∼20 μm. At a laser repetition rate of 1 kHz, chirped longer laser pulses always induce larger refractive index changes than those by a 40-fs laser pulse. An optical waveguide exhibiting an NA of ∼0.04 is fabricated.
