This paper describes stimuli-responsive double-network hydrogel microfibers formed by a microfluidic spinning system. By controlling laminar flows in the microfluidic system, stimuli-responsive microfibers with variety of sizes and structures, such as double-layered and hollow fibers, were fabricated. We confirmed that the microfibers can respond to the changes in temperature and pH, resulting that (i) large deformation of double-layered microfibers and (ii) pumping of fluid inside the hollow microfibers. Our stimuli-responsive microfibers could be applied to chemical-reaction-based microactuators and micropumps toward soft robotics and medical applications.
