Questions such as why people choose to undertake Japanese Studies and what their aim is in doing so are important issues that will impact the future of the discipline. The main theme of this chapter concerns my thoughts and opinions on the future of Japanese Studies. First, I express my thoughts on Japan as a country. Second, I outline the history of Japanese Studies in Japan. Third, I examine the history of Japanese Studies in countries other than Japan. And fi nally, I discuss the present and future of Japanese Studies.
