Synthesis of a zero-birefringence optical polymer by doping with strontium carbonate crystal

We have proposed the "birefringent crystal dopant method" as the method of eliminating the orientational birefringence of poly[methylmethacrylate (MMA) / benzylmethacrylate (BzMA) = 78/22 (wt/wt)] (P(MMA/BzMA)). We synthesized SrCO3 with various aspect ratios and lengths by a homogeneous precipitation technique using urea with the various reaction times. SrCO3 were doped into P(MMA/BzMA) films. The films were uniaxially heat-drawn at 130°C, 4 mm/min. The orientational birefringence of the drawn P(MMA/BzMA) film at 633nm was compensated by doping with 0.5wt.% of SrCO 3 (an average length of major axis 290 nm and an average aspect ratio of about 3.2).
