Drawing on and extending the research on escalation of commitment and organizational learning, this paper intends to elaborate upon inherent difficulties of learning from relatively large failures. We introduce the paradox of learning from failures, which explains unexpected outcomes when learning from failures is purposefully sought. We propose three such paradoxes: escalation paradox, repetition paradox, and defensive paradox.
