Perfluorosulfonic acid polymer membranes impregnated with various room-temperature ionic liquids were evaluated as the possible electrolytes for polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs) or direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) operated at elevated temperature (∼200°C). The conductivity of the polymer electrolytes (Nafion®) containing various room-temperature ionic liquids was examined by both DC and AC measurements under dry hydrogen atmosphere at 120-200°C. The conductivity of a membrane was found to be determined mainly by that of the ionic liquid impregnated in the membrane. It suggests that protons associate with anionic species of ionic liquids and transported by a kind of vehicle mechanism in the membrane.
