The modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer decomposes the incident SLTM beam into even and odd components in regard to the mirror reflection. When the beam is either x- or y-polarized, the interferometer splits into HG10 and HG01 components just like a polarization beam splitter. The transverse modes of the light beam have infinite numbers of mutually orthogonal bases, whereas there are only two degrees of freedom for polarization.
