Vertically separated anisotropic 3D collagen microchamber array

This paper describes a vertically separated anisotropic collagen hydrogel microchamber array where the boundary could be observed. We dispersed anisotropic collagen/alginate microparticles into microchambers and dissolved only the alginate hydrogel networks. As the result, remaining anisotropic collagen spread at the bottom of each microchamber with keeping the boundary vertical. We successfully demonstrated to observe encapsulated adherent cells in each side and the clear boundary between differently labeled collagen. Our microchamber could be powerful tools for in vitro 3D tissue models, which require to investigate the influence of the boundary of 2 types of ECMs on cell behavior.
